The satin fabric is truly unique. Find out more about it!

Satin is a fabric that has a strong effect on our senses. See for yourself! Take a moment to think about your first associations with it…

Satin – what kind of fabric is it?

When you think of satin, usually its first features that come to mind are

  • deep shine,
  • softness,
  • a pleasant chill…

All these associations are, of course, very apt. Satin has a very intense effect on our senses of sight and touch. The intensity of the sensations it provides can be surprising, as it’s itself extremely delicate.

Let’s now take a closer look at the essential features of this material:

Satin – what is it?

Let’s start by clarifying that the term isn’t really a description of a type of fabric. In fact, it’s a distinctive way of weaving fibres (one of the three basic ones), i.e. a strictly fixed arrangement of two threads – warp and weft.

How is the satin weave created?

Satin is made by making a very elegant weft satin weave. Its characteristic feature is the dispersion of the points where the weft and warp threads interlace. Their specific arrangement leaves long, loose threads, as a result of which one side is matte and the other is distinguished by considerable gloss.

Depending on its purpose, it’s made from different raw materials – polyester, cotton, viscose or, for its exclusive version, silk.

History

Satin is timeless! It was produced as early as in the 6th century in Byzantium; then it set out to conquer Europe. It was used as a decorative fabric in palace interiors and to make royal garments, vestments, as well as clothes for the aristocracy (learn more about the history of satin and modern methods of its use).

Satin is synonymous with elegance. Thanks to its shiny finish, it’s an extremely effective eye-catcher,  which makes it perfect for special occasions – it’s often used in the wedding industry – when creating wedding hall decorations and for sewing wedding outfits including, of course, the bride’s dress and various accessories.

Satin is never out of fashion! In the fashion industry, it’s mainly associated with lavish parties and retro-style chic resembling the 1920s.

It’s also used to sew light and airy women’s dresses (as well as underwear and linings). However, in the 1980s, designers brought satin into everyday life. Since then, even sportswear and pop clothing made from sating have been featured in many collections.

Decorations and accessories

Moreover, satin is used to make a variety of decorative textiles for the home (bedding, curtains, pillowcases, or lampshades). It’s also an extremely original upholstery fabric.

It’s an extremely popular fabric – not only because of its distinctive classic elegance. This also results from its functionality. It provides a unique sensory experience – it is slippery and cold to the touch, thus ensuring high thermal comfort on hot days. This is why it’s so often used for summer bedding and nightwear.
