Satin material – specification

Satin fabric is a type of satin, made up of various types of fibers. One of its sides is shiny due to the satin warp weave, the other (constituting the inside of the pouch) has a satin weave and is matte. Both cotton satins, silk blends and fabrics are made of viscose fibers and the most durable polyester satins are available on the market. It is from the latter, and therefore the most durable that we sew the bags that we stock in our store.

Satin – the origin of the fabric and its name

Satin comes from China, its name comes from the word “Zaiton”, the Arabic name of the Chinese city of Quanzhou. There was one of the most important ancient commercial ports there. It was there that the merchants first bought these popular fabrics which are still very popular today.

Different types of satin:

There are many different types of satin available, so before purchasing a specific product, it’s always worth taking a look at the label. We distinguish the following types of satin:

  • Cotton satin – is satin produced from natural cotton fibers. It is used to make clothing, bedding, and lingerie. The natural fibers allow the skin to breathe and effectively wick away moisture, which means they are very friendly to the human body. It’s also worth knowing that natural satin is highly resistant to wear and maintains its wonderful original appearance for a long time.
  • Silk satin – undoubtedly the most luxurious type of satin. It is characterized not only by the properties mentioned earlier but is also considered hypoallergenic. Silk satin is exceptionally resistant to dust mites and molds settling on it.
  • Polyester satin – as the name suggests, it is a type of material made from synthetic fibers. Polyester satin is known for being much more affordable than natural fiber materials. Its characteristic feature is that it poorly absorbs water (but dries quickly).

Many stores offer products made from blended satin, which allows the material to gain specific properties.

How to care for satin?

There is no definitive answer to this question – it’s always worth checking the label of the product and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Cotton and polyester satin can usually be machine washed at temperatures ranging from 40 to 60 degrees Celsius, but silk material prefers slightly warm or even cold water. Higher washing temperatures may cause it to shrink. For silk satin, experts recommend gentle hand washing, as it is the least invasive method for this type of fiber. When it comes to ironing, it should always be done on the left (non-shiny) side with a moderately warm iron. Using the steam iron function is a good idea – it minimizes the risk of damaging the fabric.
