Hints on how to tidy your home effectively

Tidying up your home – step by step

Tidying up your space should always start with…. making a plan! You will find that planning the whole process will make it much easier for you to succeed. Clean once, but do it right!

General home cleaning - sample plan:

Create a plan. If you’re going to do a general house clean, it’s a good idea to divide the work over several days. By dividing the work into stages, you won’t get discouraged and will clean more efficiently and thoroughly, rather than just superficially. The number of stages at this point will depend on the size of your home and the size of each room (and, of course, whether there is a lot of clutter). You can separate the work by category of items or by room.

Weekly housecleaning – example breakdown by place:

  • Day 1: Window cleaning
  • Day 2: Clothes wardrobe
  • Day 3: Cleaning kitchen and bathroom
  • Day 4: Living room and bedroom
  • Day 5: Other rooms and balcony
  • Day 6: Dusting and flooring
  • Day 7: A well-deserved rest 🙂

Tidying up the house – breaking down the work by category of items:

  • Stage 1: Clothes and other textiles
  • Stage 2: Documents and books
  • Stage 3: Small items (cosmetics, kitchen gadgets)
  • Stage 4: Objects of sentimental value (memorabilia, photographs, hobby collections)

Sorting clothes is the most difficult stage of home tidying for many people

Household tidying in 4 easy steps

  1. Get rid of unnecessary items. If you have too much of it, you’ll never get rid of the clutter. Marie Kondo, author of guides on minimalism and effective tidying, advises that when making selections, gather all the items in a category in one place – on a table or at least on the floor. Then take each item you own and decide whether it is useful, beautiful or whether it brings you joy. Items that do not meet these criteria should be removed from your environment (sold, given away or thrown away).
  2. Sort things out. Have you managed to get rid of excess stuff? It’s time to tidy up! Categorise everything you’ve decided to leave behind – group it thematically, for example according to its purpose or where it will be used.
  3. Clear out your space. You’ve managed to get rid of the excess stuff and sorted out the remaining stuff – great! Clean the space of dust and dirt before putting them away. During a general tidy up, try to look in every nook and cranny. It’s time for a thorough vacuuming, mopping and scrubbing!
  4. Plan your organisation. A big clean is the perfect opportunity to plan the organisation of things anew! The last stage of a general clean-up is very important, so we will discuss it in detail in the next paragraph.

General tidying at home – how do you organise your space?

Congratulations! You are already at the finishing line! You can now start arranging items in cupboards, cabinets and boxes. We have some practical tips for you at this stage too:

  1. Every item you have decided to leave behind should have a fixed place in your home. This makes it much easier to find, store and put away.
  2. Each item should be stored as close as possible to where it will be used most often.
  3. Stock up on boxes and bags for storage. Things you don’t use regularly (such as seasonal items and clothes) can be placed in boxes or organiser bags. You can take the storage bags into the attic, basement or place them on the upper, harder-to-reach shelves in the wardrobe. Are you worried that storing things this way will develop an unpleasant smell over time? We have a solution for that too! Check out how to make homemade moisture-absorbing bags
  4. Are you wondering how to store small items (e.g. office accessories, hair clips and hair bands)? Try organizer bags. Fabric pouches with drawstring are multi-purpose packaging that will make it easier for you to store a variety of items around the house.

Keeping your home tidy – 6 simple tricks

Finished tidying up your home and wondering what you can do to keep the effect for as long as possible? Implement the following 5 habits!

  1. Regularly repair damaged and throw away unnecessary items – try never to have an excess of things in your environment again.
  2. Apply the 1 for 1 principle – when buying a new item, always get rid of its predecessor from your home. Feel that the selection was not enough and you are still overwhelmed by an excess of items? You could try always getting rid of two items after buying a new item.
  3. Put things away – the process of tidying up won’t require as much time in the future if you develop the habit of putting things away. Things strewn across worktops or left on the floor disturb the impression of order. Put clothes in the wardrobe instead of on a chair.
  4. Regular housekeeping- The key to keeping things tidy is to be systematic. Small household chores in particular are not worth putting off. You can assume that all chores that take less than 5 minutes are done immediately. Adults often tell children that they should tidy up after the previous activity before starting a new one. You should do the same: make your bed as soon as you wake up, tidy up in the kitchen after cooking and wash the dishes immediately after eating.
  5. Create a cleaning plan. Depending on your preference, you can use different methods – a cleaning schedule (by room or object category) or set aside 10-15 minutes a day to tidy up. You may find it hard to believe, but you can really get a lot done in 15 minutes! You can do it, as long as you concentrate solely on the task at hand. If you don’t like to spend all day on a thorough cleaning, try this method – set a stopwatch or a timer and go!
  6. Once every six months, make a thorough selection of your surroundings.
